Local residents are continuing to get calls from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service demanding payment for money owed. Authorities are reminding residents that this is a scam.
Hutchinson Police say they’ve recently received numerous calls from residents reporting that the caller says they’re from the IRS and that the resident owes them money. The caller also says if they don’t call back, a warrant will be issued for their arrest.
The IRS does not call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer.
Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.
The IRS also does not demand that you pay taxes without the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe, and they do not threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers, or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying.
