(Learfield News Service)  Republican State Senator Scott Newman of Hutchinson chairs the Senate transportation committee and says he’ll hold a hearing early in the new session to get to the bottom of a recent data breach involving the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The addresses of 15-hundred people were inadvertently sent to three different companies. Newman says he has serious concerns. He says “I no longer believe that the state agency MNIT, which is the IT department for the state of Minnesota, or the individual agencies like DPS have the ability to handle our private information and do so in a safe manner.”

In this latest breach, officials say it does not appear that private data has been accessed or used unlawfully.

Newman says the hearing will likely take place the second week of the session.
