(KWLM/Olivia MN-) A Bird Island man was sentenced to 41 months in prison Monday for arson and cruelty to animals charges.
On September 26th 35-year-old Jeffrey Ackerson admitted intentionally starting his home on fire which eventually destroyed the house and killed the family dog. He was also charged with insurance fraud, but that charge was dismissed.
Ackerson said he had become frustrated with trying to renovate the home and started the fire in the garage with a workshop torch.
A former fireman, Ackerson was sentenced by Judge Bruce Christopherson to 41 months, minus 15 days credit for time already served.
He was also ordered to pay $2590 in restitution.
