(Learfield News Service/Willmar, MN) — A 38-year-old Ridgewater College Student is inspiring state legislation on epilepsy.
Ruth Schmitz proposed in a college English paper a one-hour training session for people in schools, colleges, and universities about how to recognize and respond to seizures. The idea is based on the Seizure Smart Schools program of the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota.
She sent her proposal to 16 lawmakers and others around the state.
Representative Dave Baker of Willmar contacted her and is working with the foundation to introduce legislation to requiring schools to provide study materials on seizure disorders and symptoms for school personnel.
