(West Central Tribune/Willmar, MN) A Willmar man is hospitalized and a suspect is in custody following a shooting early Sunday morning in Willmar.
Willmar Police and Willmar Ambulance personnel were dispatched at 3:11 a.m. Sunday to the 900 block of Second Street Southwest in response to a report of a person having been shot. Officers arrived to find a 29-year-old Willmar man with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Authorities say the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was transported by ambulance to Rice Hospital, then airlifted to CentraCare Hospital in St. Cloud. His current condition is unknown.
Officers spoke with numerous witnesses on the scene and learned there had been a gathering at a home in the 900 block of Second Street Southwest where the victim reportedly was trying to get the suspect to leave. As the two spoke outside the home the suspect is alleged to have pulled a handgun and shot the victim in the chest, then fled the area.
The suspect was found at about 5 a.m. at an address in southeast Willmar. He allegedly had a handgun in his possession when taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old male from St. Cloud. He is being held at the Prairie Lakes Detention Center pending formal charges.
