Two suspects have been charged in connection with an assault that was reported in Hutchinson early Friday morning.
At just after 3:30, police were called to the 400 block of California Street regarding an assault on a 33-year-old Sauk Rapids man.
The victim told police he had met one of the suspects on a social media app and they agreed to meet. The suspect said he would be bringing a friend.
When they met, the victim said the two asked him for money and he gave them $24 in cash, and they began walking away. The victim said he followed them and that’s when the two suspects began punching and kicking him and also hitting him with a tree branch. Authorities say the victim was bleeding from the face and head and was taken to Hutchinson Health for treatment that required stitches and other medical care.
Police apprehended and arrested the suspects near the Target store on Highway 15 South.
18-year-old Markell Vashawn William Olliffe of Hutchinson and 19-year-old Derek Lee Preston-Olson of Minneapolis have each been charged with four 2nd and 3rd degree felony counts that include assault with a dangerous weapon and aiding and abetting assault-causing substantial bodily harm.
