Historical Marker Discovered Missing Near Hawick

(KWLM/Willmar MN-) A historical marker near Hawick went missing Wednesday, but not for long.

The marker is entitled “Cape Bad Luck” and was located in extreme northeast Kandiyohi County, southwest of Paynesville.

Bob Larson of the Kandiyohi County Historical Society told KWLM the property owner noticed it missing when he was mowing the lawn on Wednesday and notified them. Larson says the word of the theft was put on Facebook by historical society director Jill Wohnoutka…

…Larson says on Thursday morning they got word by Facebook Messenger that the marker was found…

…Larson says a crew from the historical society was dispatched to St. Martin to retrieve the sign on Thursday where it will be put back in it’s rightful place.

It marks where Sioux Indians ambushed three U.S. Cavalry soldiers in September of 1863, killing Sergeant William Edwards as they rode from Paynesville to Manannah. Larson says the Facebook posting that the sign was missing was viewed by 10,000 people in one 12 hour period.
