(West Central Tribune/Willmar, MN) — Two kayakers were rescued Monday afternoon after their kayaks overturned on Big Kandiyohi Lake.
The West Central Tribune reports the mishap was reported at 1:21 p.m. Monday by a caller who heard screams for help from a watercraft located about 400 yards from shore off the south side of the lake and out from the island.
The caller told the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office that multiple individuals were in the water.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, while emergency services were on their way to the scene, a citizen with a pontoon went out onto the lake and found two individuals in the water, holding onto their kayaks.
The kayakers, two 19-year-olds from Kentucky, were out on their kayaks when one of them began taking on water and eventually fell into the lake. The second kayaker attempted to help his friend get back into the kayak but also ended up in the water when his kayak overturned.
Authorities say both men had life jackets in their kayaks but were not wearing them.
Neither was injured in the incident.
