(Learfield News Service) Drop the “Redskins” name — that will be the message from protesters at a march (4pm) and rally (5pm) before the Washington N-F-L team takes on the Minnesota Vikings at U-S Bank Stadium tonight (Thurs 7:20pm).
Henry Boucha with the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media says people should know how the word “Redskin” originated. He says, “There was a bounty on the Indians and scalps were worth quite a bit of money, for men, women and children…. When the blood ran down their faces, they called them redskins, and that’s how that name came about.”
Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and several state lawmakers are scheduled to speak at today’s protest.
Boucha says advocates have meetings in coming weeks with team owners and league officials.
