(Learfield News Service/Dallas, TX) — Liquid milk consumption in the United States is off by more than 40 percent since 1975.

The latest victim of the shrinking dairy industry is a major milk producer based in Dallas, Texas – Dean Food. That company has filed for bankruptcy.

Thousands of dairy farmers in Upper Midwest states like Minnesota have gone out of business in the last few decades.

Changing consumer habits are blamed, with non-dairy alternatives like soy and almond milk claiming bigger shares of the marketplace.

Dean Food owns Land ‘O Lakes, and is considering a sale to Dairy Farmers of America, owner of Kemps.
