$1.5-Million Damage in Hutchinson Walmart Arson Fire/Two in Custody

Charges are pending against two Hutchinson teens in connection with a fire at the Hutchinson Walmart Sunday afternoon.

At about 3pm, Hutchinson Police and Hutchinson Fire Departments responded to an active fire at the Walmart at 1300 Hwy 15 South.

Hutchinson Police say the fire was started in the men’s clothing department and the fire suppression system had been activated. When officers arrived there was still a small fire burning that was extinguished by responding officers with fire extinguishers.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the fire was deliberately set. Two 13-year-old Hutchinson boys were identified by a Hutchinson Police officer utilizing store surveillance.  The two boys were later located and taken into custody.

Authorities are requesting 1st-degree arson charges through the McLeod County Attorney’s office.

The State Fire Marshall estimated the damage to be between one to two million dollars.

The store remains closed today (Monday).
