The USS Minnesota has been named the best ship in the Atlantic fleet.
The state’s namesake was recently awarded the Battenberg Cup by the military for the crew’s excellence in all aspects of submarine operations.
Each year, the Battenberg Cup Award is presented to only one of the nearly 100 eligible surface ships, aircraft carriers and submarines, based on crew achievements.
Commissioned on Sept. 7, 2013, Minnesota is the 10th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine.
It is the first submarine to bear the name Minnesota and the third U.S. Navy vessel to carry the name Minnesota.
It is 377 feet long with a beam of 34 feet.
Virginia-class fast attack submarines have a crew of approximately 149 made up of 18 officers and 131 enlisted Sailors.
