(KWLM/Blomkest MN-) An aging speedboat had a major malfunction, sending 7 people into the waters of Big Kandiyohi Lake Sunday afternoon.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department says they were called at 5:55 p.m. to the lake in the southern part of the county on the report that 3 adults and 4 kids were in the water near a submerged boat.
KWLM reports all the occupants were rescued by a person in a pontoon boat, and no one was hurt.
The investigation revealed a 35-year-old Hector man had loaded his 1974 Larson speedboat with passengers and was attempting to get up to speed, when he heard a loud noise from the rear of the boat. The outboard motor had torn free from the transom and went into the water, and the boat began to sink.
The sheriff’s department believes the age of the boat, 46-years-old, and being overloaded lead to it’s demise.
The boat and it’s assorted parts were recovered from the lake.
