A St. Cloud man was injured when the van he was driving hit a tree near Clearwater Friday afternoon.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says at about 1:45 p.m., deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries near the intersection of County Road 75 and Franklin Road in Lynden Township.
The Sheriff’s Office says the 29-year-old was driving an SUV southbound on County Road 75. The vehicle left the roadway on the east side of County Road 75, went down a steep ditch, and struck a large pine tree bringing the vehicle to an abrupt stop. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage.
The driver said he swerved to avoid striking a deer on the roadway and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.
Authorities say further investigation revealed the driver was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance and was booked into the Stearns County Jail for 1st Degree DWI.
