Tiger Gameday – Week 2

Last Game: Hutchinson 40 St Cloud Tech 6

Game Recap: Mitchell Piehl keyed the Hutch attack, rushing for over 250 yards and scoring on three long Touchdown runs as the Tigers opened up the season with a win. The defense was stifling as well allowing just one 2nd half score. Ty Glaser and Tristan Hoppe also got into the endzone in the win.

Current Record: 1-0

This Week’s Opponent: Big Lake (0-1) lost to Rocori last week 24-8

About the Opponent: The Big Lake Hornets come to town tonight, fresh off a loss to the defending state champions, Rocori 24-8. Last week the hornets used a grand total of….ONE formation. Yep, same look on every play…but they can do different things out of that formation. You may see more than one formation tonight but you’ll see a team that likes to run the ball with a big RB that can run hard. Defensively this is not an overly big defense, but they are quick and can pursue the ballcarrier well.

Key Hutch Players: Tiger OL. I wanted to put them down here in this spot to highlight the great play we saw out of them last week. Sure, Mitchell Piehl and Company did the running…but those Tiger backs weren’t even touched on multiple runs because the blocking was so good. That line is a good mix of veteran leaders and new starters this season. Sometimes it can take a bit of time to gel…but that unit looked solid last week.

4 Downs/Storylines:
First Down: Defense played very well last week. Week one sometimes you don’t look for much, you look for things to build on. I think they were a step or two down that path already. They lined up correctly, made good reads and swarmed to the ball. Now gotta keep that up into the oncoming weeks as well. Especially a team that likes to run as much as Big Lake will, which leads into….
Second Down: Controlling the run game of BL. Historically BL has been a run first team and from what we hear that’s no different this year. If you can control the run game, force BL into 3rd and Long situations that can be advantagous for the Hutch Defense. Then when you get those 3rd down situations…stop them and get off the field!
Third Down: Offensively it’s always about execution. Execute the running game the way It can and should be played. If you do that, it can really wear down teams in the second half. Last week you got big plays offensively. Those are nice…but so are those 15 play 80 yard TD drives we’ve seen before as well!

Fourth Down/Quick Hit Keys: his is the first year for BL Coach Bob Blanchard as the “official” head coach. He was the interim head coach last season and took over the job on a full time basis this season…There was no school today, it’s MEA. How will these kids keep their routines. Coach Andy Rostberg has an idea on how he hopes the kids act. You’ll have to tune into the pregame interview for that nugget. But let me just say Moms of players should be VERY happy with his answer…Gotta play dad for a moment and give a shout out to the Hutch Tigers Marching Band who will be performing at halftime of the game tonight. Yes, my daughter’s in there playing flute, BUT a salute to all those performers who will have to hold metal instruments in some COLD weather tonight! Go Tiger Marchers!
