MEEKER COUNTY BUDGET INCREASES
Meeker County will add up to $2.68-million to its operating budget in 2009.  The West Central Tribune reports during Tuesday's regular meeting, the Board of Commissioners approved a preliminary budget worth $25.8-million, and 11.6 percent increase over 2008.  In tandem with the budget, the county is proposing an $11-million levy for 2009, which is just over $808,000 more than the 2008 levy.  Officials say the county's 2009 proposed levy is a 7.8 percent increase over 2008.

RNC/MCCAIN ACCEPTS NOMINATION
The candidates are nominated, now it's on to November.  John McCain accepted his party's nomination for President as the Republican National Convention wrapped up Thursday night in St. Paul.  In his acceptance speech, the Arizona Senator styled himself as a POW turned political rebel.
Anti-war protests reached a crescendo on the last day of the convention.  Nearly 400 people were arrested Thursday after a series of marches and sit-ins in St. Paul.  That brings the number of convention-related arrests in St. Paul and Minneapolis to more than 800 for the week.

WIENERMOBILE TRAVELS THE AREA
If you see a huge hot dog in the area this weekend, don't be alarmed.  The Oscar Mayer Mini-Wienermobile is making the rounds.  Even though it's a scaled down version of the original Wienermobile, it's still 16 feet long.  Oscar Mayer officials say this area is one of the few places the rolling hot dog will visit this year.  On Saturday, the Wienermobile will be at the Country Market in Waconia from 8 to Noon and in Hutchinson at CashWise from 1 to 5, before moving on to St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids on Sunday and then to several Twin Cities suburbs Monday and Tuesday.  You can also sing the jingle, show off your Weiner Whistle talent, and get a picture with the only Mini-Wienermobile in the world.

FASTENAL SETTLEMENT
Fastenal Company says it will pay a $10-million class-action settlement to former employees who sued the company last year for unpaid overtime wages and work-break pay.  It's unclear how many people would be paid as a result of the settlement.  But according to estimates made in October by an attorney for the plaintiffs, more than 2,000 current and former employees of the Winona-based industrial supplies seller may have been entitled to back pay from as far back as 2003.

RNC
In rousing speech, Vice Presidential pick Sarah Palin has set the stage for John McCain to claim the GOP Presidential nomination tonight (Thursday).  Palin used her speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul to make repeated digs at Barack Obama.  She also praised McCain, saying he is "exactly the kind of man" she wants in the White House.  While Republicans convene in St. Paul, Barack Obama is training his focus on battleground states.  The Democrat accused John McCain of trying to run from his party's bad economic record Wednesday in Ohio.  Today, he stumps in Pennsylvania.
